If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious or just not like yourself, you’re not alone.
Three years ago, a mental health resource launched across the country: 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. It’s a free, confidential, and easy-to-remember number that connects you to trained counselors, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Since its launch in July 2022, people in crisis have contacted 988 more than 10 million times. In Central New York, Contact Community Services has answered over 46,000 calls to the Lifeline.
What is 988 for?
988 is for anyone experiencing:
• Suicidal thoughts
• A mental health or substance use crisis
• Emotional distress of any kind
But it’s also for moments that are difficult to navigate alone, like:
• Feeling overwhelmed
• Anxiety or panic
• Worrying about a friend or loved one
• Trouble sleeping or thinking clearly
• Intense mood swings
• Relationship problems, grief, or trauma
Sometimes, people don’t have the words to explain what they’re feeling. They just know something isn’t right. That’s okay. When you call, text, or chat 988, a counselor will listen, support you, and help you feel more in control.
How is it different from 911?
911 sends emergency responders for immediate in-person support, often with imminent situations where a lack of intervention could result in harm to a person or place.
988 connects you with compassionate trained counselors whose role is to promote stabilization and de-escalate situations to reduce suicide risk and harm to self and others.
988 is not here to judge or take control. It’s here to listen and help. Most people who contact 988 (about 80%) get the support they need right over the phone.
What happens when I call?
You’ll hear a short greeting and may remain on the line to be connected to support. You can choose special services for Veterans and Spanish speakers, too. Your call is then routed to a nearby crisis center—like Contact Community Services, where local counselors are ready to help.
Your counselor will:
• Listen to what’s going on and inquire about thoughts of suicide, as well as any other safety concerns that are presented
• Help you understand your feelings
• Work with you on next steps, such as safety planning, receiving continued follow-up support, or offering referrals for longer-term support within your community
988 is here for you. Anytime. For any reason
Whether it’s a single tough moment or a deeper struggle, 988 offers a lifeline of hope, connection, and care. You deserve support—and 988 makes it easier to get.
If you or someone you care about is struggling, don’t wait.
