• Bassett Medical Center Performs Network’s First TAMBE Procedure to Treat Aortic Aneurysm — Bassett Medical Center’s vascular surgery team successfully completed Bassett Healthcare Network’s first GORE EXCLUDER thoracoabdominal branch endoprosthesis (TAMBE) procedure in October 2025. The procedure was made possible using Bassett Medical Center’s state-of-the-art hybrid operating room TAMBE, which received FDA approval in 2024. This is an innovative development in the treatment of complex aortic aneurysms. TAMBE is an all-in-one, branched device that is implanted to treat the aneurysm. After the patient is under anesthesia, it is inserted into the body through a small incision and, with needle punctures and imaging, is guided into place. Once in place, the vascular surgeon opens its portals so that graft extensions go into vessels to the lungs, intestines, and kidneys. These grafts open the artery and bolster its walls. “This is a real advancement in the treatment of these types of aneurysms. Twenty years ago, these procedures would require large incisions in the chest and abdomen, which came with a significant rate of mortality and risk of complications,” said physician Shelby Cooper, chief of vascular surgery at Bassett Healthcare Network. “Patients would typically be hospitalized for approximately two weeks and have rehabilitation after they were discharged. This procedure reduces that time to only a few days and can often remove rehab as a necessity.”

• Bassett Cancer Institute Among First Cancer Centers in the Nation to Participate in Alpha DaRT Pancreatic Cancer Clinical Trial — Bassett Cancer Institute is among the first cancer centers in the United States to participate in an international, multi-center clinical trial for patients with inoperable, advanced, or metastatic pancreatic cancer. The highly targeted radiation therapy, Alpha Tau Medical Ltd.’s Alpha DaRT, is implanted into the cancer to deliver treatment from inside the tumor. Bassett Cancer Institute is one of only a number of cancer centers in the United States, Canada, and Israel that will participate in the clinical trial. Only 30 patients will be enrolled before the trial is closed to new patients.

• Bassett Medical Center Earns Accreditation as Level Three Trauma Center from American College of Surgeons — Bassett Medical Center’s trauma center recently received Level III verification from the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma, affirming the center’s trauma protocols and practices comply with the highest standards of care. A Level III trauma center, like Bassett Medical Center, is verified, designated, and equipped to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, stabilization, and emergency operations to trauma patients. Level III trauma centers have one or more transfer agreements with nearby Level I or II trauma centers that can receive patients with greater clinical needs. Bassett Medical Center’s agreement is with Albany Medical Center in Albany.

• Chief of Women’s Health at Bassett Healthcare Network Named to National List of Gynecologic Surgeons Research All-Stars for 2025 — Physician Samuel Badalian, Ph.D., has been named a 2025 Healthcare Research All-Star for outstanding contributions to healthcare research in gynecologic surgery. This honor is in recognition of the quantity and quality of research authored and published by Badalian. The Healthcare Research All Star lists are compiled by Avant-garde Health and include only the top 5% of all hospitals and surgeons publishing leading-edge research across 12 specialty care areas in the United States. This research ultimately leads to better patient outcomes. Dr. Badalian placed above this threshold and is honored in the top 3% of all surgeons. The bulk of Badalian’s research work is focused on urogynecology and pelvic floor disorders in Armenia. Badalian has been instrumental in establishing urogynecology as a subspecialty in that country. In July 2024, Badalian and a team of doctors supervised five urogynecological fellows as they performed 23 successful surgeries at the Wigmore Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Yerevan, Armenia.
