• Opening of Samaritan Neurosurgery — In July 2025, Samaritan Medical Center announced the return of local neurosurgery services with the opening of Samaritan Neurosurgery. The practice is led by Stephanie Zyck, a highly trained neurosurgeon who brings advanced training and a broad range of expertise to the region. She earned her medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University, completed her neurosurgery residency at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and pursued advanced fellowship training in endovascular neurosurgery, neurotrauma and neurocritical care. Zyck is joined by Caitlin Winkler, a certified physician assistant. Together, this dedicated team ensures that timely, compassionate, and specialized neurosurgical care is available locally.
• Improving Lung Cancer Diagnosis — In August 2025, Samaritan announced the use of innovative advanced technology to improve lung cancer diagnosis. Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s MONARCH Platform, a robotically assisted bronchoscopy system enhanced with advanced computer-guided technology, is improving how physicians reach and biopsy lung lesions. Samaritan is currently the only hospital in New York state utilizing the Monarch Platform with advanced technology, setting a new standard for lung care in the region. The technology effectively integrates bronchoscopes, instruments, navigation, and robotics into one easy-to-use platform that provides the physician with a full suite of possible endoscopic intervention capabilities. The MONARCH Bronchoscope is designed for continuous vision throughout the procedure. The latest advancement in the platform’s navigation technology, MONARCH QUEST, combines next-generation navigation software with the GE HealthCare OEC 3D Imaging System to speed up algorithm and data processing. It is designed to travel deep into the lungs and precisely guide a biopsy instrument into even the most difficult nodules, while maintaining vision during the most critical segment of the procedure, the biopsy.
• Cardiac Cath Lab — For years, patients in the North Country suffering from heart attacks and other cardiac emergencies have faced a critical hurdle: Time. Without a local cardiac catheterization lab, those in need of urgent intervention have been transported more than an hour away to Syracuse for lifesaving procedures. Samaritan Medical Center took a significant step toward changing that reality. In mid-December 2024, the hospital officially submitted a certificate of need (CON) application to the state Department of Health to establish a state-of-the-art interventional cardiac catheterization lab. The CON was approved, and construction is expected to begin early 2026 and be completed within the year. Once opened, the cath lab will allow Samaritan to treat heart conditions more rapidly, improving survival rates and reducing long-term complications for patients throughout the region. Samaritan plans to recruit specialized interventional cardiologists, and train existing staff to provide comprehensive cardiac care, allowing the hospital to not only treat emergency cases but also offer elective procedures, reducing the need for patients to travel outside the area for routine heart care. As part of the process, Samaritan will formally partner with Upstate University Hospital for support and advanced cardiac surgery.
