Orthopedic surgeon David A. DiStefano joins SOS

Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS) announced it has recently hired physician David DiStefano to its joint replacement and sports medicine teams.

DiStefano is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is extensively trained in both arthroscopic and open repair and reconstruction of the shoulder and elbow, including fracture care, tendon and ligament repair and reconstruction, as well as arthroplasty.

“SOS is fortunate to have Dr. DiStefano join us,” said physician Todd Battaglia, president of SOS. “He is an excellent surgeon who will provide the quality care SOS prides itself on, and he is the son of our late esteemed colleague, Dr. Richard DiStefano. We’re honored he chose SOS to practice and continue his father’s legacy.”

Prior to joining SOS, DiStefano trained with the University of Colorado and Steadman Hawkins Sports Medicine Clinic, working with physicians who cared for professional and collegiate athletes in Denver. He also trained with the prestigious Sydney Shoulder Research Institute in Sydney, Australia, and has already published papers in multiple peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, and has presented his research at multiple national and international conferences.

DiStefano completed his residency at the University of Rochester Medical Center, where he was academic chief resident his final year. He earned his medical degree from SUNY Upstate Medical University, and his bachelor’s degree with magna cum laude honors from St. Lawrence University in Canton.

DiStefano said he has a particular interest in treating shoulder arthritis in both geriatric and nongeriatric patients, as well as being skilled in general fracture work and geriatric fracture care.
