• Orthopedic and Spine Care — St. Joseph’s Health opened St. Joseph’s Health Orthopedic and Spine Care, expanding access to high-quality, comprehensive orthopedic and spine services for patients across Central New York. Four highly regarded orthopedic surgeons have joined St. Joseph’s Physicians, each bringing extensive experience in treating complex musculoskeletal and spine conditions: Kevin Kopko, medical director of joint surgery, specializing in hip and knee replacement, partial knee replacement and robotic surgery; Bradley Raphael, medical director of sports medicine, specializing in shoulder, knee, sports medicine, PRP, cartilage, joint preservation and orthobiologics; Aaron Bianco, specializing in neck and back; Justin Iorio, medical director of spine surgery, specializing in cervical, thoracic, lumbar surgery, spinal tumors, degenerative conditions, minimally invasive procedures, and navigation. St. Joseph’s Health Orthopedic and Spine Care offers the latest diagnostic and treatment options, including robotic-assisted joint replacement and minimally invasive spine procedures—all delivered within a compassionate, patient-first environment.

• Thoracic Surgery — St. Joseph’s Health launched its new thoracic surgery service line, marking an important expansion of its cancer care affiliation with Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo. The thoracic program begins with the addition of two thoracic surgeons, bringing advanced surgical options to patients in Central New York. Joining St. Joseph’s Health are two thoracic surgeons, David W. Wormuth and Michael Parish. This thoracic program expands access to expert care for patients with lung disease and chest-related cancers, while reinforcing St. Joseph’s Health commitment to bringing comprehensive surgical services close to home.

In addition, St. Joseph’s Health also welcomed Najam Ud Din, medical oncologist, further strengthening its medical oncology service line and its collaboration with Roswell Park’s nationally recognized oncology expertise.

As a member of the Roswell Park Care Network, St. Joseph Health’s offers patients the benefit of advanced therapies, personalized treatment plans and access to clinical trials for a wide range of cancers, including breast, colorectal, lung, gastrointestinal and blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma. The Roswell Park Care Network — extending across New York and Northwest Pennsylvania — improves the reach and impact of quality cancer care offered by Roswell Park, the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in Upstate New York.

• New Vinci SP (Single Port) Robotic Surgical System — St. Joseph’s Health expanded its advanced surgical capabilities with the addition of the da Vinci SP robotic surgical system by Intuitive, offering patients access to the latest in minimally invasive surgical technology. The da Vinci SP system is designed to perform delicate and complex procedures through a single incision. This innovative technology features a narrow, flexible port and a 3D high-definition camera system, giving surgeons enhanced precision, dexterity and control. Procedures using this platform may result in less pain, faster recovery times and minimal scarring for patients. Po N. Lam, an affiliated urologic surgeon with St. Joseph’s Health and physician with Associated Medical Professionals of NY, was the first to perform procedures with the new system at St. Joseph’s Health.

The system is approved to support colorectal and urologic surgeries and will complement the hospital’s existing robotic-assisted surgery program.

• SP Robotic System for TAMIS — St. Joseph’s Health was the first in the region to use the SP Robotic System for TAMIS (surgery). Physician Heitham H. Wady, a provider with Colon Rectal Associates of Central New York, LLP and affiliated surgeon at St. Joseph’s Health, was the first surgeon in Central New York to perform transanal minimally invasive surgery (TAMIS) using the da Vinci SP robotic surgical system by Intuitive. The procedures marked a significant milestone in patient-centered robotic care. TAMIS allows surgeons to remove certain rectal lesions or early-stage tumors through a natural orifice rather than a traditional abdominal incision. For qualified patients, this can mean avoiding major surgery and full organ removal. Most patients return home the same day, with less pain, reduced risk of complications, and a quicker return to normal activities. St. Joseph’s Health recently added the da Vinci SP system to its already robust robotic surgery program. Designed for single-incision procedures, the da Vinci SP features a narrow, flexible port and a high-definition 3D camera system, enhancing surgical precision, dexterity, and control.
