• Golisano Center for Special Needs Rolls Out New Device to Help with Autism Assessment — Upstate Medical University’s Golisano Center for Special Needs is using a new diagnostic tool that could revolutionize the diagnosis and care of children with autism. The tool, called EarliPointTM Evaluation, is authorized for use in children between 16 and 30 months of age to aid in the diagnosis and assessment of autism and it does so in a fraction of the time it takes to assess a child without using the device. EarliPoint measures children’s looking behavior to provide clinicians with objective measurements of each child’s strengths and vulnerabilities.

• Care Pass Aims to Enhance Patient Experience, Streamline Visits — A new initiative at the Nappi Wellness Institute is aimed at improving patient experience by providing safe and timely care. The Nappi Wellness patient care pass is a special card patients receive upon check-in at their provider. The care pass helps the patient’s care team know where they are in the clinic and helps staff provide more timely care. The goal is to improve the patient’s experience moving through visits, including the ability to provide shorter wait times.

• Oneida Health Hospital Joins Upstate Telestroke Network — Oneida Health Hospital in Oneida, N.Y., is the latest health care facility to become a member of the Telestroke Network at Upstate University Hospital’s Comprehensive Stroke Center in Syracuse. Through its Telestroke Network, Upstate University Hospital can connect its stroke specialists with the medical staff at Oneida Health Hospital—some 30 miles east of Syracuse— to aid in the assessment and care of patients at the Oneida facility who may be experiencing a stroke.

• Upstate wins CenterState CEO’s Business of the Year for Community Involvement — Upstate Medical University, the region’s largest employer, has been named winner of the Business of the Year for Community Involvement award by CenterState CEO, a business group that provides business development assistance to nearly 2,000 businesses throughout Central and Northern New York. “This recognition is a reflection of the work of Upstate’s more than 13,000 employees, students and volunteers who extend the boundaries of our campus to improve the health of communities throughout the region with our education, research and clinical programming,” said Upstate President Mantosh Dewan, MD.

• Upstate Community Hospital Opens New Interventional Radiology Suite — Upstate Community Hospital opened a new interventional radiology (IR) suite. The new suite, located in Room 1330, features a spacious procedure room, control room and an IR recovery area with patient pre-and post-holding bays and a fully integrated patient monitoring system. As part of this project, all imaging equipment in two X-ray rooms has been replaced and upgraded.

• Upstate to Create AI Center for Health Equity, Analytics and Diagnostics — Upstate Medical University is one of eight SUNY schools to receive funding to start work on creating centers or other campus elements related to artificial intelligence (AI) and how it will impact society. Upstate will receive $200,000 to help create the AI for Health Equity, Analytics, and Diagnostics (AHEAD) Center for advancing AI research and its application in healthcare.

• Upstate Opens New Pediatrics Outpatient Site — Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital opens new pediatrics practice site. Upstate’s new pediatrics location is at 8687 Carling Road, Liverpool, near the Wegman’s Great Northern store. A new Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) site opened in this location last May. The move to the new facility, which relocates Upstate Pediatrics from Baldwinsville, more than doubles the size of the practice from 5,600 square feet and 12 exam rooms to 12,133 square feet and 20 exam rooms with a special room to monitor behavioral health concerns.

• Gov. Hochul, Legislature Approve $450M for New Hospital Annex to Feature New, Expanded Emergency Department — Gov. Hochul and the New York State Legislature have finalized the enacted FY 2025-2026 state budget that contains $450 million in capital to fully fund plans to construct a new hospital annex for SUNY Upstate that will include a new and expanded emergency department, a more modern burn unit, and some additional operating room capacity. This capital allocation led by Governor Hochul and the Central New York (CNY) delegation represents the largest capital funding allocation in Upstate’s history.

• Upstate Ranked Among Best in Nation for Pediatric Care — Money magazine has ranked Upstate University Hospital as the 17th Best Hospital for Pediatric Care in the country, and the second best in New York state. Pediatric services are provided by Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, which features more than 100 pediatric specialists in over 40 specialities, delivering cutting-edge patient care, education, research, technological innovations, and clinical trials.

• Upstate Foundation Honors Tom Golisano’s $20 million in Support and Selebrates $7.1 Million Raised for Youth Mental Health — The Upstate Foundation this week celebrated philanthropist B. Thomas Golisano for his remarkable impact on pediatric health care in Central New York, unveiling the newly named Golisano Children’s Pavilion in his honor for his beneficence over the past two decades totaling $20 million, including a $10 million unrestricted gift in 2024. In addition, the Upstate Foundation also celebrated the conclusion of its Campaign for Child & Adolescent Mental Health which raised $7.1 million for a variety of youth programs and services at Upstate. In another nod to Golisano, the city renamed parts of Irving Avenue Golisano Way.

• Upstate Cancer Center Earns National Accreditation for Excellence in Rectal Cancer Care — The Upstate Cancer Center has received accreditation under the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Accreditation Program for Rectal Cancer (NAPRC). Over the last 20 years, the outcomes of rectal cancer are tremendously variable and highly contingent upon specialization, training, and volume. In response to this variability in care delivery, the NAPRC was developed based on international models that lead to better outcomes for patients, including a reduction in recurrence rates, better quality of life, improved function, and increased survival. NAPRC-accredited programs must demonstrate compliance with the NAPRC standards, which are focused on facilitating a multidisciplinary, holistic approach to treating patients with rectal cancer.

• Upstate Spina Bifida Center Earns National Reaccreditation through 2030 — The Spina Bifida Center of Central New York at Upstate Medical University has earned reaccreditation as a Clinical Care Partner by the Spina Bifida Association (SBA). This designation is valid through 2030. “We are honored to be recognized by the Spina Bifida Association as a Clinical Care Partner,” said Nienke Dosa, MD, MPH, medical director of the Upstate Spina Bifida Center “This accreditation reflects our team’s commitment to delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to individuals living with spina bifida. We are proud to be alongside families every step of the way—from diagnosis through adulthood—and to be part of a national network working to improve quality of life and long-term outcomes for this community. Special thanks to our incredible surgeons and community partners in helping us achieve this milestone.”

• Upstate Breaks Ground on New State-of-the-Art Upstate Pathology Institute — Upstate Medical University officials broke ground on a new, state-of-the-art, 109,000-square-foot clinical pathology laboratory facility, known as the Upstate Pathology Institute, located at 6624 Fly Road in the town of DeWitt. This project will consolidate and modernize Upstate’s Pathology Department, positioning it for future growth, improved efficiency, and expanded regional service that drone operations will facilitate. The institute will be located adjacent to Upstate Bone and Joint, home of Upstate Orthopedics.

• Upstate, ESD Provide Additional Support to Upstate Biotech Ventures, Bringing Bund Total to $10 Million — Upstate Medical University and Empire State Development (ESD), in collaboration, provided an additional $4 million to Upstate Biotech Ventures (UBV), bringing the fund total to $10 million. State University of New York Chancellor John B. King Jr., made the announcement July 15. UBV is Upstate’s startup biotech fund, which is also supported ESD and SUNY, and managed by Excell Partners. This milestone comes about a year after the fund’s official launch in July 2024 with an initial $6 million in backing from Upstate and ESD.

• Upstate’s Economic Impact Report Highlights $3.2 Billion Contribution to New York State’s Economy — Upstate Medical University, the largest employer in Central New York and a leading institution in medical education and healthcare, contributes $3.2 billion to the state economy and supports, directly and indirectly, more than 24,000 jobs, according to a new report. The comprehensive economic impact report underscores the substantial contribution Upstate makes to the regional and state economy. The report, conducted by Tripp Umbach, details Upstate’s significant influence in terms of employment, tax revenue, community involvement, and academic and research endeavors. (With a history spanning more than 30 years, Tripp Umbach has partnered with more than 1,000 organizations, delivering services such as community assessment, economic impact assessment, and economic development strategies. The firm has completed more than 500 economic impact studies in the past three and a half decades.)

• Upstate Launches Major Renovation of Weiskotten Hall — Upstate Medical University’s iconic academic building, Weiskotten Hall, a longstanding symbol of excellence in medical education and research, will undergo a transformational renovation, beginning this fall. The project will modernize and reconfigure the nearly century-old structure, bringing new life to the building while preserving its distinctive architecture. Designed to create a more welcoming, functional, and inspiring environment for students, faculty, and researchers, the renovation represents a bold step forward in supporting Upstate’s mission of education, innovation, and community health.

• Upstate Researcher Awarded $3.1 Million NIH Grant to Advance Understanding of Severe Dengue Infections — Adam Waickman, PhD, an infectious disease researcher at Upstate Medical University, has been awarded a $3.1 million grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to investigate why some dengue virus infections lead to life-threatening illness. Dengue virus (DENV) is transmitted by mosquitoes and infects nearly 400 million people worldwide each year, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. While most infections are mild, about 500,000 people annually develop severe dengue, including dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome.

• Upstate Medical University Named Top Fundraiser at 2025 American Heart Walk — It’s official: Upstate Medical University was the top fundraiser for the American Heart Walk this year. Upstate raised more money than any other institution to support American Heart Association. The walk was held March 30 at the SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College. The Heart Walk is one of Team Upstate’s key events of the year with participation from across the Upstate campus. This year, 231 participants raised $21,553.

• Virtual Nurses Mow Integral to Upstate University Hospital Admissions and Discharges — Patients admitted to or discharged from Upstate University Hospital may now experience that process virtually to improve the patient experience and reduce the workload of bedside nurses. Virtual nursing got a kick start during the COVID-19 pandemic, when nurses would use iPads to communicate from hallways with patients in their rooms or with family members who were not allowed to visit. Since then, hospitals across the country— including Upstate—have been experimenting with how to use the technology more.

• Gregory Conners Named Nation’s first B. Thomas Golisano Professor of Pediatrics — Gregory Conners, MD, MBA, MPH, chair of the Department of Pediatrics and executive director of Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, was named the nation’s first B. Thomas Golisano Professor of Pediatrics. The announcement was made by Lawrence Chin, MD, the Robert and Molly King Endowed Professorship of Neurosurgery and dean of the Norton College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University, and Eileen Pezzi, MPA, vice president for development at the Upstate Foundation. This newly established endowed professorship honors Conners’ exceptional leadership in pediatric medicine and his national impact on pediatric emergency care, education, and advocacy.

• Upstate and Hudson Headwaters Health Network Announce Partnership and Medical Scholars — Upstate Medical University’s Norton College of Medicine and Hudson Headwaters Health Network announced a new partnership aimed at building a stronger, healthier future for rural and underserved communities in the greater Glens Falls, Adirondack and Plattsburgh regions. The North Country Medical Scholars Program is for students who are from—or deeply connected to—the communities served by Hudson Headwaters Health Network..

• Upstate Honors Pioneering Women with Life-sized Bronze Statues Welcoming Students to Campus — Upstate Medical University is honoring two of its earliest and most influential graduates with the unveiling of two statues in their honor on the plaza outside of Weiskotten Hall today. Statues honoring Elizabeth Blackwell, MD, and Sarah Loguen Fraser, MD, flank the entrance to Upstate’s main academic building, welcoming students and encouraging them to look to the future

• Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital joins Golisano Alliance as Tom Golisano Commits to Funding Six New Children’s Hospitals — Entrepreneur and philanthropist Tom Golisano announced the creation of the Golisano Children’s Alliance with a commitment of $253 million to six new children’s hospitals. This support will unite the six newly funded and four existing Golisano Children’s Hospitals among them Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital, to establish the Golisano Children’s Alliance to more easily share resources and expand access to crucial pediatric care. This landmark commitment raises Mr. Golisano’s lifetime philanthropic giving to more than $1 billion.

• Upstate Celebrates 500th Living Donor Kidney Transplant with Couple’s Remarkable Story of Giving — When her husband, Mark, needed a kidney transplant, Anita Devito knew she couldn’t help him; their blood types are different. Instead, she gave one of her healthy kidneys to a stranger, hoping in return that a compatible kidney would find its way to Mark. Anita and Mark participated in the National Kidney Registry’s Paired Kidney Exchange a program where incompatible donors donate a kidney on their loved one’s behalf. Mark’s transplant marked the 500th living donor transplant performed at Upstate, a major milestone for the program, which started in 1968 and is one of the oldest in the country.
